Directly from New York comes a debut demo from Hung, a band whose musical style is a mixture of death melodic metal and progressive sounds. Even if it seems an unimportant detail, the demo comes in a cool digipack case and the music, fortunately, is of a high quality.
The five songs that comprise “Progeny” reveal their love for bands like Opeth, not as much in their lyrics, but in the way they conceive music. Certainly major classic European bands influence Hung, yet they do show us their own personal style, which could be promising for future tracks.
The songs are fairly long and are well structured and sung, even though some tracks get lost in themselves (they don't get anywhere), with long monotonous results. Hung still has a lot of room to improve their sound, and a more aggressive approach wouldn’t be a bad start—the vocalist should improve in the parts where he actually sings.
Besides those matters that left me unconvinced, I did enjoy “Progeny”, especially their incorporation of violin sounds, which matches perfectly to Hung’s overall sound. There are good musicians in this band with good ideas. I hope in the future they’ll manage to develop these ideas to their full potential.
Even the production is good, made at Eric Rachel's Trax East; final mastering by Alan Douches. I hope Hung obtains a contract with some producing company that will believe in them. The qualities emerging from "Progeny" sound very promising indeed.
