The progressive angels of death HUNG are back and promise to have gotten better since their last EP. Simply from a technical perspective, that should prove to be difficult, as the predecessor to “Progeny” was in fact very good musically, if only there hadn’t been that horrible production. And now, two years later?
Yes, now it’s up to par! The sound of the 2008 record is powerful and pounding, but is still lacking a little bit in conciseness, yet without it being bothersome in the long run.
So much for the sound, now on to what’s making the sounds.
Here HUNG have picked up right where “Matter Of The Blood” left off. The music has definitely improved in quality because of the better sound and is gaining a lot of ground due to the melancholic atmosphere in the calm phases, in which the violin stands out. The opening with the title song, which just barely misses the 10-minute mark, makes it clear right away what new ground these New Yorkers want to break together with the listener. All the elements that are found in the songwriting are laid bare here. The sad, depressive elements alternate skillfully with melodic death metal riffs and the very variable vocals also constantly oscillate back and forth between grunting, black metal shrieks, and harmonically very clean phases. The listener who discovers this first song would love the rest of “Progeny,” were it not for the song in the middle of the record. “Wishing Scar” is unable to replicate the otherwise very high level. It appears that the band couldn’t come up with anything else while writing this piece and so the track drags along in a mediocre way and starts to become boring. Fortunately the two final tracks can completely make up for this misadventure.
HUNG are able to wow me once more, despite this one dud (and even though only two of the five tracks are actually new), and showcase their rather unique position within death metal, which lies not in the least with the weeping and wailing electric violin, which brings that certain something to the collection of songs. Those who look for the exceptional in music instead of just wanting the clobbering-then-done type of stuff should get their hands on this record. A nice EP with a lot of variety and emotion!
